ビワはバラ科ビワ属に属する果樹で、原産地は中国南部とされています。その果実の形が、楽器の｢琵琶｣に似ていることから命名されたとも言われていますが、植物の枇杷は2000年前の栽培記録があるとも言われており、どちらが先かは異論もあるところでしょう。

野生の間引かれない枇杷の実は小さく、その形も楕円になる前の丸い小さな実が鈴なりに実ります。
