冬に咲く早咲きの桜を総称して冬桜と呼ぶこともありますが、品種としての冬桜は小葉桜と同一で10月から12月にかけて花をつけ、日本の広い範囲で見られる草木花です。また赤い花を咲かせる寒桜とも異なる品種です。
花びらは小ぶりで、樹木もソメイヨシノのようにそれほど大きくはならない愛らしい木花です。
